Attorney James Ruel is a member of the Family Law Practice Section of Ruel Ruel Goings & Britt, LLC. He is a co-founding partner of the Firm. He represents clients throughout the State of Connecticut in their efforts to resolve family disputes concerning child custody, parenting schedules, the establishment of paternity and with regard to the financial disputes associated with child support, alimony, and the distribution of property upon the dissolution of marriage.

In the first several years of his practice, Attorney Ruel lived in New York City and worked as an attorney in the Stamford, CT and New York offices of Robinson & Cole, LLP, in its Commercial Litigation department. During that time, Attorney Ruel litigated and tried cases in the state and federal courts of Connecticut and New York involving commercial disputes, such as breach of contract, intellectual property and employer-employee disputes, and involving tort claims such as negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud.

Attorney Ruel brings the experience he gained in litigating complex commercial disputes to his family law practice where business and asset valuations are often disputed and where clients place a premium on the ability to negotiate financial settlements between spouses or parents. His experience includes the litigation of high conflict child custody disputes, as well as several disputes involving marital estates valued in the tens of millions of dollars. Attorney Ruel’s experience also includes the litigation and resolution of two cases in which the martial estates were valued in excess of $300 million.

Attorney Ruel has extensive experience in litigating cases where a spouse’s interest in the income or principal of a substantial trust corpus is at issue. He has also been retained in certain matters to provide advice and counsel to the trustees of trusts, following the initiation of divorce proceedings by or against a trust beneficiary.

Attorney Ruel regularly attends meetings and seminars with local mental health professionals and family law practitioners to discuss the effects of divorce and custody disputes upon the mental health of spouses and their children, and the ways in which therapists and attorneys in this field can better serve the needs of their clients.

Attorney Ruel represents clients in every Judicial District throughout the State of Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Finance, from Boston College’s Carroll School of Management in 1996. Attorney Ruel received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1999, and was admitted to practice that autumn.
